my fragmented self

This video project explores identity, and the act of exploring it.

We represent ourselves digitally all the time. Our self-image and identity, shaped and perceived through different digital mediums, are no less important than the ones from the real world.

As a result, identity becomes a constant performance, even when there is nobody to perform for. We keep showing ourselves, trying to fulfil the expectations of an imagined “digital gaze” of “others”, even when nobody is looking.

This performative identity is filtered and constantly curated, never raw or untouched. It can always be looked at from the side and changed: anything we don’t like can be deleted, or transformed into something else.

Photos and videos, once tools for reproducing reality, now constantly transform or distort it, distancing us from its true essence. They create simulacra, which often feel more real than reality itself.

The project asks: what is our role in all of this? Are we creators? Participants? Observers? What is the difference between these roles? What is the real self, and what are we trying to be?
